On 14 November 2010, Bluestar Intercultural Foundation had the great pleasure of hosting Dr Anwar Ibrahim, the former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia. Dr Ibrahim had joined some local dignitaries including religious, academic and public service personalities for dinner at their centre.
Dr Ibrahim talked about the challenges that Malaysia is facing and how the key means to overcome some of their obstacles would be to adopt a transparent government that focuses on justice and equality. He was philosophical in his review of the last few years that he endured and was determined to persist in his drive to lead his country some day in the future.
He was delighted to see that intercultural work in Australia has come along in leaps and bounds from his previous trip and this time he noticed the Muslim organisations, such as Bluestar were taking great initiatives in areas where they had been somewhat estranged. He was praising the work Affinity is doing to foster greater harmony in society as he believes this inclusive approach is what he will be modeling in Malaysia.
The evening was very engaging as local members were able to share experiences and benefit from Mr Ibrahim's personal triumphs. There was a great sense of pride in the way Canberrans are able to respect each other's values and work towards community harmony. Some members were mentioning how Canberra had intercultural activities for a long time and the fact that most Canberrans have a greater educated community, this removes all forms of ignorance and allows strong friendship and trust to be formed, paving the way for collaborative work.
Towards the end of the evening, Mr. Asmi Wood presented Dr Ibrahim a gift from Bluestar and thanked him for taking the time out to visit them in their centre and look forward to hosting him on future occasions.
