On the 8th of March 2011, six members of the Bluestar Interfaith Foundation (BIF) attended the Pancake Tuesday event organized by the Canberra City Uniting Church.
The BIF members were welcomed warmly by Reverend Ivan Roberts and Reverend Myung Hwa Park. The event began with the guests being hosted to a sumptuous meal of pancakes and other delicacies prepared by volunteers at the church. Guests were also given a quiz to fill up where they were posed questions related to the Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths. The event proper began with a short address by Rev Roberts who described the significance of Pancake Tuesday. He noted that the Pancake Tuesday is associated with the day preceding the fast of Lent. This rationale of this practice is to use up rich foodstuffs such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. The liturgical fasting emphasized eating simple food and refraining from food that would give pleasure such as sugar, dairy and eggs. As such, pancakes are made to use up these foodstuff. The address was followed by a discussion of the quiz where guests were asked answers to the questions in the quiz. BIF members and the congregation of the Uniting Church learned new information about each other faiths. Following this, Ayse Seymen, one of the members of BIF gave a short talk about the significance of fasting within the Islamic faith. The BIF was grateful to the Uniting Church for organizing this event which not only enlightened us about the Pancake Tuesday event but also enhanced our knowledge on the Christian and Jewish faiths. Such events are also important in enhancing inter-religious ties between faith communities in Australia.
