On the 15th of February, the Australian Muslim community was infuriated when ACT Liberal Senator Gary Humphries tabled a petition signed, calling for a moratorium on Muslim immigration. Bluestar organizes an intellectual discussion titled Towards a Harmonious Future. Muslim in Australian Society with Muslim community leaders and professionals.

This had come shortly after Senator Cory Bernardi, the Liberal Parliamentary Secretary remarked that "Islam is a totalitarian, political and religious ideology". True to its objective of enhancing relations between the different religious communities in Australia, the Bluestar Intercultural Centre decided to organize a dialogue with Senator Humpries which also involved leaders and other esteemed members of Canberra's Muslim community. The dialogue which was held on the 10th of March 2011 at the BIC lasted for more than two hours.

Mr Abdul Celil Gelim, the Executive Director of BIC opened the session with a short speech. In his speech, he expressed the disappointment of the Muslim community about the insensitive comments made by several Australian politicians against Islam. He noted that such views are expressed due to ignorance about Islam. He ended his speech by calling for dialogue to resolve the current problem. Senator Humphries' speech followed shortly. In his speech, he explained the reasons for which he tabled the petition. The Senator observed that he tabled the petition because of his belief to the rights of free speech. He felt that as a member of the Federal Parliament, he was obliged to place before the Parliament views of citizens regardless of how insensitive or problematic the petition might be. Senator Humphries said that he disagreed with the petition and expressed his unequivocal opposition to the petition. He assured the participants that he would continue working to enhance multiculturalism.

The main highlight for the night was the dialogue between the senator and the Muslim participants. Several participants were outrage by the Senator's action and demanded that he retract his action. One key theme that dominated the dialogue was the issue of multiculturalism and Muslims in Australia. Several participants highlighted the success of multiculturalism in Canada and the United States where Muslims seemed better integrated. This was juxtaposed against the seemingly dismal state of Muslim integration in Australia. Factors such as income levels, levels of Islamophobia and historical developments were cited as possible reasons for the difference. Some participants believe that there are impediments within Australian society preventing Muslims from integrating within the larger Australian nation. Others called for more to be done in integrating lower income Muslims to the larger Australian society. Despite the intensity of the discussions and the sensitivity of the topics engaged, a high standard of decorum was maintained throughout the night.

Most of the participants also believe that the Muslim community needs to move forward and not be held back by these developments. Participants agreed that the Muslim community will need to do more to enhance their position within Australia. The Senator also proposed ways whereby Muslims can be more engaged in the political process and thus ensure that their voices are heard in mainstream society. The Executive Director of BIC presented the Senator with a small token of appreciation. At the end of the night, most of the disagreements were ironed out and the climate had changed where new friendships were cemented, new relationships formed and intercultural bridges built.
